1 Background: Indian. Features: improvisation; use of rhythmic cycles; drone; sitar; tabla. Passed on by oral tradition.
2 Structure: Alap-free tempo, improvised, explores rag, solo, slow tempo. Gat-tabla enters with tala, fixed composition, faster tempo, thicker texture.
3 Rhythm and metre: Jhaptal; Tintal; Keherwa; Rupak tal; Ektal. Tal only come in after the Alap. Much syncopation.
4 Melody: Tihai (repeating short phrase three times) and Tan (fast scales).
5 Instruments: Sitar; Tabla; Voice; Sarangi; Sarod; Pakhawaj; Cymbals; Bansuri and Esraj
6 Tempo: Slow in Alap and faster in Gat.
7 Harmony: Use of drone.
