Chipboard/particle board - mind map

  1. Chipboard = particle board

    • Particleboard is difficult to mold or shape because of its tendency to chip and break.
      • Particle board is non-directional, that is the grain does not go in one direction
    • Particleboard like other wood based products will respond to changes in relative humidity of the surrounding air
  2. What is the difference between particle board and MDF?

    • Particleboard is a relatively inexpensive waste-wood product made by combining and heat pressing sawdust and resin.
      • Stacked particleboards in cross-section reveal their pressed sawdust composition.
      • Particleboard is commonly used in lower-end furniture, floor underlayment and as a substrate for kitchen and bathroom countertops. The material can be milled with all power tools but is subject to a moderate amount of tearout.
        • Medium-density fiberboard, or MDF, a costlier alternative, is made using small wood fibers rather than wood dust.
  3. Chipboard is manufactured by hot compression of wood particles mixed with binding agents and forming a mixture in to a sheet.

    • The wood particles are often a mixture of soft woods and hard woods
  4. Particle board flooring is available in square edged sheet form, but most of the material is used with tongue & grooved edges

    • In domestic house construction in Australia the width of particle board requires varies depending on the width of the joists.
      • Particle board flooring width in Australian homes is between 19 - 22 mm
  5. MR particleboard = moisture resistant particleboard

  6. The difference between the wood chips used for particle board and for MDF is the difference between products run through a meat grinder and a meat mixer

  7. Standard particle board is the standard or basic product

    • Special products (MR particleboard and Flooring particleboard) are the ones specifically identified by name printed on the shhet or by the color code
  8. Yellow tongue is a structural grade particle board used for flooring

    • Particle board called yellow tongue has a tongue and groove. The tongue is bright yellow in color and made from PVC
      • Blue tongue is a different size particle board to yellow tongue, and is identified by the blue PVC tongue
      • Green tongue particle board is a different size to the yellow and blue tongue. It is identified by the green colored tongue
