1. Aerobic and anaerobic groups

   • Obligate aerobes
   • Microaerophiles
   • Obligate anaerobes
   • Aerotolerant anaerobes
   • Facultative anaerobes

2. Aerobes

   • need oxygen to oxidize substrates

3. microaerophiles

   • require limited amount of atmospheric oxygen for growth

4. facultative anaerobes

   • organism that can grow in the present or absent of oxygen

5. aerotolerant

   • do not use oxygen in grow but can survive in its presence

6. obligate anaerobes

   • which are harmed by the presences of oxygen
