u8.5 Wifi Security Issues
The risk of unauthorised stations associating with an access point or intercepting traffic is clearly the biggest risk with a wireless LAN.
Evil twin access point
- Attacker uses an Ap with the same SSID as a target AP and gets stations to connect
- Attacker can forward all data to the original AP and record it for analysis
- Attacker uses an Ap with the same SSID as a target AP and gets stations to connect
Access point configuration
- All AP's from the same manufacturer come with default settings
- IE: Default admin credentials, enabled protocols, SNMP, web interfaces etc
- If the default settings are not changed its easier for an attacker to compromise the AP
- All AP's from the same manufacturer come with default settings
Rouge AP's and Ad-hoc Networks
- Adding an unauthorised AP to a network
- Attacker can connect to that AP at any time to connect to the underlying network
- Adding an unauthorised AP to a network
Denial of service
- Accidental or deliberate
- Caused by interference with the signal
HUB broadcasts
- If an AP is connected to a network hub, any data that is transmitted by any device connected to the network hub will also be broadcast by the AP onto the wireless LAN segment.
