Oxidation of Alcohols by dichromate(VI) ions
  1. Primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols can be distinguished by the products of the reaction with warm acidified potassium dichromate(VI)
    1. dichromate ions act as oxidising agents and are therefore reduced to chromate ions which are green
      1. If oxidation reaction occurs, colour change observed from orange to green
        1. use [O] to represent the oxidising agent
        2. PRIMARY
          1. aldehyde (distillation)
            1. Carboxylic Acid (reflux)
          2. TERTIARY
            1. X
            2. SECONDARY
              1. Ketone
                1. X
              2. Chemical Tests for Aldehydes and Ketones
                1. Tollens' Reagent
                  1. contains silver nitrate (AgNO3) dissolved in ammonia (NH3)
                    1. In presence of Aldehydes silver ions reduced to silver metal and leave silver mirror on tube
                      1. Aldehyde is oxidised to carboxylic acid
                    2. Fehling's Solution
                      1. Contains blue copper (II) ions (Cu2+).
                        1. In presence of aldehydes Cu2+ ions are reduced to Cu+ ions.
                          1. Observation is a formation of a brick red precipitate of Cu2O (copper(I)oxide)
                            1. Aldehyde is oxidised to a carboxylic acid
                          2. NO REACTION WITH KETONES
