Conducting Both Preliminary and Thriller
  1. Planning : The preliminary task has a very different story line in comparison to our Thriller. Depicting that there will be different elements and concepts of constructing them both. Planning was the very first thing we did in order to create an image of what we wanted for the film. In preliminary we didn't really need to plan as much as we did in the Thriller reasons for was because the preliminary task was simple with no big obstacles to over take whereas with the Thriller it took a while to negotiate on ideas therefore lacking in a overall coherence. We have learned that planning helps outline a story line which is beneficial throughout filming as there are examples of next scenes therefore it is a set guide in production.
    1. TIME: The preliminary was less time consuming it didn't take long to plan, film or edit. Planning may have taken us one day and the filming also would have taken us one day likewise with the editing. Hence the preliminary task was not as important in producing than was our Thriller. Nonetheless we weren't looking for perfection at that time in terms precise editing, steady recording and majority of the camera angles/shots. However because our Thriller is valued more in prior to our end of year results it meant that it had to be our main focus and make sure to spend as much time on it as possible for it to be at its best standards. The planning for our Thriller took up to 2-3 lessons reasons for this was because we wanted to come up with a original yet captivating story line. When planning we did our story board which was much more detailed than the preliminary task. Moreover it took a while to come to conclusion on certain thing such as location, actors, dates, costume ect.
      1. TIME: When it came to filming we had to film 3 different different scenes unlike the preliminary task where it consisted on one. The first scene we filmed for our Thriller was the kidnapping scene this estimated around 2-3 hours whereas the whole preliminary task would have taken approximately 2 hours of filming. As you can see the Thriller took up a lot of time. Nonetheless filming for the casino scene took 4 hours which was a struggle as it got really late and most of the actors were tired to perform their best whereas in the preliminary task it was quick short and snappy. In terms of editing, finding music, adding effects it was much difficult to do for the Thriller and time consuming rather than than for the Preliminary. Overall for the Thriller it took a month and half from the start to the end to produce. Overall we have learned to work in fast pace yet producing good quality also we have maintained a strict limitation on meeting deadlines so that we are on track
      2. Camera angles/shots: When filming the preliminary task we tried to use as many camera angles and shots however it was difficult because the story line it self didn't have much to it. For example we used the eye line match at the part where the student and teacher are both looking at the clock. Other camera shots we used was the pan and over the shoulder which was done well. However in the Thriller the main purpose of it was to use majority of camera angles so for example long shots, tracking, pan, over the shoulder, close up and eye line match were used in the Thriller. By the end of the thriller we had realised which shots and angles where best suited for a particular scene. Also we had learned how to apply them correctly and produce good quality.
        1. Music/Sound : In the Preliminary task there was no music or sound track as we felt that it did not need any. However in the Thriller we used two soundtrack instrumentals one for the Ident and the other for the casino scene. Likewise we used a sound effect for the Title. Now that music was needed we had more time to look for music that suited our Film and establish new soundtracks. An example of how we have improved on sound from the preliminary was when we faced techniqual difficulties with the sound in reference to the voices in the conversation between the student and teacher which had not been captured. Therefore we had to use voice overs on Final cut express and redo the speaking scene. In order to prevent this from happening we made sure to do test shoots before filming so that the sound was working.
          1. Continuity and Costume continuity was our main focus on accuracy we needed to make sure in all productions that the film was continuous in terms of actors, hair , makeup , costume ect. For the preliminary it wasn't a big problem as we filmed in one day and there was only one particular scene. With the Thriller we had to make sure all of the above were continuous for example if we had to film a scene in a mater of two/three days we need to make sure it was exactly the same as the previous footage as it would be breaking the continuity rule.
            1. what have i learned: Through out the process of constructing our Thriller we had developed skills and techniques form our Preliminary which were beneficial for our Thriller. We had prepared for our Thriller through the previous exercises we did on camera shots/angles and editing. Increased in the level of use in prior to technology such as the camera and editing soft wares such as live type and Final cut express. Also a sense of directing the Film has improved in terms of having a fixed image of what we want like wise we were willing to negotiate with each other in our group to reach a final conclusion regardless of what the situation was. We sensibly dealt with problems that occurred in constructing our Thriller as we felt we had it under control unlike when we did the Preliminary we were unable to deal with techniqual problems due to lack of experience.
