Fluid Properties
Density
- Density = Mass/Volume
Specific Weight
- Specific Weight = Gravitational Force/ Volume of Fluid
Surface Tension
- Definition: The measure of the molecular attraction per unit length
- Units: N/m , lb/ft
- Application: Water striders is able to walk on water despite being denser than water. The water molecules at the surface water are locked like a thin dense molecules due to surface tension and the long legs of striders enable them to distribute their weights evenly over a big surface area. [1]
Capillary Action
- Application: The paper towel draws the orange liquid upward due to capillary action. The water moves along the fibre gaps of the paper towels as the cohesive force between the water and paper towel is stronger than the cohesive forces in the water. [2]
- Factors affecting height of fluid
- Surface Tension
- Radius of tube
