  1. VoIP
    1. Voice over internet protocol
      1. Is a set of rules for transmitting audio messages over the internet
      2. Allow you to make free voice calls from your computer to friends computers
        1. You can also use a webcam to make video calls
          1. good for keeping in touch with people
          2. POP3, IMAP and SMTP
            1. Communication protocols used when sending and receiving emails
              1. Simple mail transfer protocol is used when the email is sent from the senders email client, for example outlook, to the senders email server and when the email is delivered to the recipients email server
                1. If the recipient uses Post Office protocol to read the email the mail server will download the email to the computer and the email will then be deleted from the server and can be read offline.
                  1. If the recipient uses Internet Message Access protocol the email is red on the mail server and not deleted and cam be accessed anywhere with a computer and internet connection
                  2. HTTP
                    1. Hypertext Transfer protocol
                      1. protocol of the world wide web
                      2. When you type in a website address to your browser it uses HTTP to ask the web server to send the files needed to show the webpage on your computer
                      3. HTTPS
                        1. Hypertext Transfer Protocol over SSL
                          1. The data transferred is encrypted so it cannot be read by anyone except the recipient
                            1. used when sending confidential information
                            2. Digital Certificates
                              1. if you double click on the padlock icon or security icon you will see the websites digital certificate
                                1. they are issued by norton and they certify the identity of the website your browser is communicating with
