Networks
  1. Overview
    1. Network card interface (NIC) is inside every computer
      1. networks let computers share resources
        1. Some connected by wires or by telephone lines
          1. file server = shares programs and data files on backing storage
            1. Print server = share a printer
              1. database server = stores larger database
                1. mail server = manages email traffic
          2. Advantages
            1. Hardwarecan be shared (less cost)
              1. Software can be shared
                1. Data cab be shared
                  1. Computers can communicate
                    1. Controlled by network manager
                      1. Easier to make scheduled back ups
                      2. Disadvantages
                        1. Cables cost
                          1. Networks can be attacked by hackers
                            1. Files can be compramised
                              1. Network crash caused havoc hard/soft ware and data cannot be shared
                        2. Types of network
                          1. Peer-to-peer = all computer are equal
                            1. Client-server = one high powered computer is the server
                              1. LAN = Local area network (in one area)
                                1. WAN = Wide area network (international)
                            1. Topologies
                                1. Bus = next to each other, one computer crash doesn't matter, slow
                                  1. Star = connected to central HUB, 1 crash doesn't matter but is HUB crashes all are down
                                    1. Ring = data is sent in a loop, one crash stops flow so all crash
                                2. intranet is the internet but in one organisation (restricted)
                                  1. extranet is part of the intranet that can be accessed by authorised members
                                  2. Network security
                                    1. Passwords
                                      1. Access rights to certain members
                                        1. Encryption
                                          1. Back ups
