    1. Price not found on the item so they must find the place that it lives or a self scan station
      1. scratched or crumpled barcodes take longer and could cause queues
  3. Advantages of barcodes TO SHOP
    1. No price tags needed
      1. automatic stock control
        patterns can be analysed
        fraud is minimised by switching price tags
Optical mark recognition
1. detect small marks on paper when scanned
2. Used in multiple choice exams and lottery tickets
3. Advantages
  1. Fast method of filling in forms
    1. fats method of reading forms
4. disadvantages
  1. forms can be large and have too many options
    1. May be filled in incorrectly and cannot be marked
Optical character recognition
1. reads text and can process it into a word document
  1. Offers fast input of data
  2. Poor accuracy (handwritten)
Machine readable tags
1. Some items have scanable tags
  1. can be scanned by a machine and update the stock control automatically
    1. Advantages
      1. Automatic stock control update
        tags provide a record of daily sales
    2. Disadvantages
      1. customers may damage tags
        update at end of day so not always up to date
Portable data entry
1. PDET can be carried around and scan items
  1. then connected to the computer and updates the stock control
    1. can be wirelessly downloaded
      1. gather data about eh amount of stock availble
        log data about items sent away by vans
        traffic wardens on setting tickets
Touch sensitive data entry
1. Input data by touch screen, patients register them selves using them
  1. Low level ICT skills needed
    1. Little possibility of damage or theft
  2. Dirty/scratched can make them hard to use/difficult to read
