1. data, information and knowlegde

   • advantages of encoding
     • less computer memory used, faster to write down codes, usually fewer erors.
   • advantages of using IT over manual methods
     • less storage space required, data kept more secure, finding infor is much faster, back up copies made, changed easily, processing data is much faster, presented in many ways, if stored on ntewrok can be accessed by many, speed of communication very fast.
     • disadvantages: cost of equiptment very high, viruses or hackers can damage data if on network, may have to train staff

2. multimedia components

   • for a good multimedia system you need: good sized, high resolution screen, mouse, game pad or tracker ball, good quality speakers, fast processor, high specification graphics card, large hard drive, DVD or Blu ray player
   • methods of working with or creating images
     • graphics tablet
     • scanner
     • digital camera
   • resolution
     • quality of image depends on it
     • measured in pixels (which is one dot of a graphic)
   • tools for creating images using ICT: zoom, selection-forms a barrier with rest of image so you can focus on just one area, transforming- can be transormed form one state to another, scaling- distorted or resized, can be changed as a percentage of another, sizing- made smaller or larger but proportions are same
   • multimedia is using many different media like sound, video, anmiantion, images
   • three types of transormation on digital images: rotation-image turned through number of degrees about a point, reflection-creates mirror image of image, scaling and sizing-make it larger or smaller.

3. bitmap v vector graphics

   • bitmap
     • made up of pixels of different colours
     • individual pixels can be edited
     • large file size as every detail of every pixel saved
     • when resized they lose quality
     • look real
     • common file formats; .bpm, .dib, jpeg, gif, tiff, .png
