Problem:
Students find they do well on their homework problems and then discover they can’t remember how to actually do the problems on the day of their exam and bomb it.
Solution:
Use the example problems to memorize the steps for solving the problem, *then* do your homework. Its critical to put most of your time and effort into learning the steps behind a problem and less time on your actual homework problems.
Step 1:
Review an example problem from your textbook or class notes. This example problem should have all the steps laid out for you to follow.
Step 2:
Next, draw a bar at the top of your page and write which example problem you’ll be working on.

Step 3:
Attempt to complete the example problem without referring to the text, notes or any outside materials. If you’re able to do so, put a check-mark in the bar you made at the top of the page. If you had to refer back to your text or notes to complete the problem, even for one second, put an X in the bar instead.

Step 4:
Keep repeating the example problem until you've given yourself two check-marks in a row for that example problem.
Once you've accomplished two check-marks in a row, do the next example problem in a similar format with a new bar at the top of the page.

Step 5:
When you've completed the relevant example problems, do your assigned homework. You’ll notice your homework goes MUCH faster now that you've learned the steps behind each problem.
