Water molecules are made up of 2 positive hydrogen molecules and one negatively charged oxygen molecule. Normal salt (sodium chloride) is made up of positive Na and negative Cl ions. When a salt crystal is added to water, the oppositely charged atoms in both molecules are attracted to each other. The water molecules "pull" the crystal apart and several molecules surround each individual atom which made up the salt molecules, with oppositely attracted atoms pointing towards each other.
