Nanomaterials
At least 1 dimension within 100 nm range.
As size reduces, Surface Area per unit Volume increases, resulting in different properties.
The above also applies as dimensionality decreases (3D to 0D nanomaterials).

Nanoscience
Origin - Talks of Richard P Feynman - 1959
Term 'Nanotechnology' - Norio Taniguchi - 1974
1980s - Invention of STM, Discovery of fullerenes
Aim of Nanoscience:
Study properties
Create
Characterize

Moore's Law
Gordon Moore - 1975 prediction - Number of transistors in an IC chip would double every 2 years.
Moore's law is an observation and projection of a historical trend and not a physical or natural law.
Applied in general to anything that increases exponentially with time.

Quantum Wire (1D nanomaterial)
Several micrometer long, but diameter is in the nanometer range.
