ABORTION
ARGUMENTS FOR
ARGUMENTS AGAINST
. Up to the individual to decide what they want to do
. lesser of 2 evils
. agape, the most loving thing to do if the baby is going to be badly disabled
. continuing with pregnancy may affect mother's health
. if mother is unable to cope, may be the better option
. MURDER!
. If it is unwanted, it can be adopted
. A disabled child is still a child and deserves to live
. life is a gift from god, and only god should have the power to take it away: it is a sin

we have two views therefore:
Pro-life and Pro-choice
Pro-life means you are against abortion and think that the life of the foetus comes before the choice of the mother
Pro- choice means you are for abortion and think that the choice of the mother should come before the life of the foetus
Roman Catholics: ABSOLUTELY NOT AN OPTION, even if:
. the mother was raped
.too young
. it was a mistake
They believe the baby has a right to life and that life begins at conception. They also believe that all life is sacred and so Abortion is murder
the only time it is allowed is if the mother's life is at risk.
Double effect Doctrine: YOU MUST KNOW THIS!!!
double effect doctrine: action where the main intention is to do good, but which may have a bad side effect.
The good intention makes the action right.
The bible is used to support this view: " before I formed you in the womb I knew you."
suggests god has a plan for each person and ending the life of a foetus is spoiling god's plan
THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
Abortion should be avoided but it should be the choice of the mother:
she may abort due to disability of the child, if she is too young, she cannot afford to keep it or she has reasons for not wanting the baby.
some Christians believe you should "treat others as you would want to be treated"
THE GOLDEN RULE
one day, a Christian may want an abortion, so others should have a choice too.
Other Christians say
very much up to the individual's conscience
practice the principle of AGAPE, unconditional love, loving someone no matter what- sometimes abortion may be the most loving thing to do for both the mother and child.
