Propeller Basics The blade angle is the angle between the plane of rotation and the chord line. The blade angle decreases from hub to tip.

The blade angle of attack is the angle between the relative airflow and the chord line.

The Helix Angle is the angle between the plane of rotation and the relative airflow.

Geometric pitch is the distance a propeller would travel forward in one revolution if it were moving through the air. This is theoretical.

The distance a propeller actually moves forwards in one revolution is the effective pitch.

Blade Questions

The effects of TAS on blade angle The angle of the propeller is determined by two factors:

The rotational speed of the propeller - determined by the engine RPM

The inflow into the propeller due (mostly) to the aircraft's TAS.

The blade angle of attack increases as speed reduces and reduces as speed increases. The RPM also has an effect on the angle of the relative air flow an increase in RPM will increase the angle of attack while a decrease in RPM will decrease the angle of attack.
