The Parthenon was built around 447 BC and finished around 438 BC.
Page 2
Materials used to build the Parthenon were limestone, terracotta, pentelic marble and wood.

The Parthenon was built in the honour of the Greek goddess Athena Parthenos (Athena the virgin) after a variety of competitions between her and Poseidon.
Inside the building stood a colossal image of Athena Parthenos, constructed of gold and ivory by Pheidias and probably dedicated in 438 BC.

The Parthenon was the symbol of power, wealth and the elevated culture of Athens. The Parthenon was one of the largest temples Greece had ever seen. The Parthenon was known as one of the most greatest and esteemed buildings of its time and is still recognized till this day.

The history of the Acropolis goes back much farther than the Parthenon itself. In fact, the temple sits on a site of a much older temple dedicated to Athena, which is now referred to as the Pre-Parthenon or Old Parthenon. This older temple was destroyed during the Persian war in 480 BCE while it was still under construction. After laying in ruins for over 30 years, the Greeks decided to revive the site and build the current Parthenon.

The architectural style of the Parthenon is in doric orders. And some ionic columns support the roof.

The Parthenon is located on the Acropolis of Athens, Greece.
Page 8
The Parthenon housed a statue of Athena, known as Athena Parthenos, which was sculpted by Phidias. Unfortunately the statute had been demolished ages ago but it was said to be 12 meters high (which is about 39 feet).
Page 9
The Athena statue depicted a fully-armed woman wearing a goatskin shield known as an aegis. She held a six-foot tall statue of the Greek goddess Nike in her right hand and a shield in her left hand that illustrated various battle scenes. Two griffins and a sphinx stood on her helmet and a large snake behind her shield.
