Chapter 3 Vocabulary

Abstract data type- is a mathematical model for data types where a data type is defined by its behavior (semantics) from the point of view of a user of the data, specifically in terms of possible values, possible operations on data of this type, and the behavior of these operations.

ArithmeticException exception- may be constructed by the virtual machine as if suppression were disabled and/or the stack trace was not writable.

Assignment statement-sets and/or re-sets the value stored in the storage location(s) denoted by a variable name; in other words, it copies a value into the variable. In most imperative programming languages

Case sensitive- differentiating between capital and lowercase letters.

Class-a set or category of things having some property or attribute in common and differentiated from others by kind, type, or quality.

Concatenate-link (things) together in a chain or series.

Constant-occurring continuously over a period of time.

Data type-determines the type of data the variable will store

Declaration-must be declared before it is used

Equal sign (=)-is an operator that indicates that the variable on the left is to receive the value on the right.

Exception-see run-time error

Floating point-denoting a mode of representing numbers as two sequences of bits, one representing the digits in the number and the other an exponent that determines the position of the radix point.

Identifier-a sequence of characters used to identify or refer to a program or an element, such as a variable or a set of data, within it.

Initialize-to assign a variable a value in a declaration statement

InputMismatchException exception-an exception thrown when user input is not as expected.

Input stream-is a bridge from byte streams to characterstreams

Instantiation- is the creation of a real instance or particular realization of an abstraction or template such as a class of objects or a computer process.

Integer division-division in which the fractional part (remainder) is discarded is called integer division and is sometimes denoted .

Keyword-a word or concept of great significance.

Literal-taking words in their usual or most basic sense without metaphor or allegory.

Logic error- is a bug in a program that causes it to operate incorrectly, but not to terminate abnormally (or crash).

Modulus division- finds the remainder after divisionof one number by another (sometimes called modulus).

Numeric expression-is a mathematical phrase involving only numbers and one or more operational symbols.

Object-a material thing that can be seen and touched.

Operator precedence-rules for specifying the order in which the operators in an expression are evaluated when the expression has several operators.

Primitive data type-are the basis for all other types, they cannot have element content or attributes.

Prompt- cause or bring about (an action or feeling).

Run-time error-An error that occurs during the execution of a program. In contrast, compile-time errors occur while a program is being compiled.

Semantic error-Writing invalid program logic that produces incorrect results when the instructions are executed.

Syntax error-a character or string incorrectly placed in a command or instruction that causes a failure in execution.

Truncate-shorten (something) by cutting off the top or the end.

Type casting-assign (an actor or actress) repeatedly to the same type of role, as a result of the appropriateness of their appearance or previous success in such roles.

Variable-not consistent or having a fixed pattern; liable to change.

boolean-denoting a system of algebraic notation used to represent logical propositions, especially in computing and electronics.

char-partially burn (an object) so as to blacken its surface.

double-consisting of two equal, identical, or similar parts or things.

final-coming at the end of a series.

import-the meaning or significance of something, especially when not directly stated.

in-expressing the situation of being enclosed or surrounded by something.

int-is a 32-bit signed integer. intelligence. intermediate. international.

java.lang- are built in packages that contains

classes that we use in the program eg.java.lang contains

classes

java.text- consists of classes and interfaces that are useful for writing internationalized programs that handle local customs

java.util- are built in packages that contains

classes that we use in the program eg.java.lang contains

classes

NumberFormat- is the internal representation of numeric

Scanner-a device that scans documents and converts them into digital data.

System.in- a group of organs that work together to perform an important function of the body
