Within the Zoo Story there is a conspicuous lack lighting, sound and music directions. The result of this in tandem with a very bare set forces the audience to focus only on the two characters and what they are saying. This fits with Albee's attempt to get the audience to think about the position they hold within the play - as it reduces the number of distractions and superfluous distractions.- Light, Sound and Music all serve to remind the audience that they are watching a play.- Lack of it also means that Albee is not influencing the way the audience reacts to a certain moment.- Can be used as a method to give the audience insight in to what a character is feeling, it's lack of it leaves even more up to interpretation.- Towards the end when Jerry dies, usually the light would fade or change, the lack of lighting change forces the audience to face the reality of what has happened in front of them, not allowing them to have a reminder that they are watching a play.
