Households use 12% less energy and industries use 60% less.
50% rise in energy use in the transport sector
Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) predicts that we will use the same amount of energy in 2030 as we do today
In 1970 we used almost 57 million tonnes of oil. In 2012 we used less than 3 million tonnes. In 1970 coal accounted for two thirds of all electricity but in 2012 it accounted for less than half. Oil use has fallen from 13 million tonnes in 1970 to 780,000 tonnes in 2012
Where do we get our energy from?
Domestic energy is ascertained from one of two sources; electricity (23%) or gas (68%)
9% of domestic energy comes from oil, wood and coal
In 1970 39% of domestic energy came from coal. Today it is less than 1%
Gas (26.8%) and nuclear (19.8%) make up the remaining fuel sources
4% of electricity is imported from France and the Netherlands
In 2012 we had to import 45 million tonnes of coal, 89% of which was steam coal
In 2013 UK produced just over 32 million tonnes of oil
