Throughout the history of Children's literature, the subject of what constitutes suitable reading matter has been much debated. What muddies the waters further is that children as a group of their own has evolved over the last few centuries, from adult add-ons to their own section of the populace. This evolution can be traced through the centuries via the literature genre that has been established as a result of the rise of childhood, and the culmination, so far, of this journey is encapsulated in the 2012 Carnegie Medal winner A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. The gritty realism of this novel mixed with a foray into fantasy, along with its dark illustrations and refusal to patronize it's target audience are as a result of the literary genre that grew out of a need to educate children, and led to the establishment of an area of literature that guides, entertains, enthralls, inspires and captures the imaginations of children of all ages, even those who are only young at heart!
