Art as Communication and Education Is art a language? Do we all understand that language? Yes, to some extent. What are the similarities between music and language? Most music is a form of language, as it in some way or another wants to convey a feeling or a message. Can music and language express the same things? Yes. Listen to the Poem by Wilfred Owen. What knowledge do we gain from this poem that would be lacking in a factual account of the First World War? In a factual account of the war, only the events would be retold, and the feelings held by the actual soldiers would not be included. How can fictional literature give us valued knowledge? Even though the setting might be fictional, you might learn valuable social skills from the characters in the literature. Why do people watch films that scare them or make them cry? To experience feelings which you might not be able to otherwise. Do you think violent films have an effect on people? Yes. Is there ever a case for censorship? Censorship may be applied to protect the public, but ethically no one should have the right to censor someone else's work.
