EBS

Volumes for EC2 storage.

Block based storage for OS / VMS ect

Placed in specific availability zone

General purpose SSD (GP2) - 3 IOPS per GB up to 10000 IOPS

Provisionds IOPS SSD (IO1) - I/O intensive operations like relational / NoSQL database More than 10000 IOPS upto 20000 IOPS

Throughput optimized HHD (ST1) - Bigdata, data warehouse, log processing. No Boot volume

Cold HDD - Cheaper. File server No Boot Volume - infrequent access

Magnetic standard - low cost. bootable

1 EBS vloum cannot mount more than 1 EC2 instance

Termination protection is disabled by default

When deleting instance EBS volume also delete by default

EBS boot volume cannot be encrypted by default. But using third party tools it can be encrypted

Security Groups

1 instance can have multiple security groups

can have any number of instances under one security group

Any change in security roles will take effect immediately

Security goups are STATEFUL - If you add an inbound rule the out bound rule add automatically (Not displaying)

No Deny traffic rules. Everything inbound is blocked by default. All outbound traffic is allowed

RAID - Redundant array of independent disks

Raid 0 - Striped. No redundancy, high performance

Raid 1 - Mirrored, Redundancy

Raid 5 - Good for read, bad for write - NOT Recommend for EBS Volums

Raid 10 - Striped, Mirrored, Good performance, Good Redundancy

When there is not enough disc IO Can use RAID

Taking a snapshot of a raid could be a problem due to interdependences of the array.

Need to stop the application

Flush all caches to the disk.

Freeze the file system

unmount the array

Shuttingdown EC2 instance (easiest way)

Amazon Machine Images (AMI)

Take snapshot -> convert to image.

it can use as a template

AMIs are regional. Bur can copy through commandLine or API
