silver fluoride does not produce a  precipitate as it is soluble in water

Dilute nitric acid added, rids of any soluble carbonates and hydroxides (impurities), as they would interfere by producing insoluble silver carbonate or insoluble silver hydroxide A few drops of silver nitrate solution are added and the halide precipitate forms
