fIntro to Scaling Networks
hierchical network design
has three disticnt layers: core distribution and access layer.
Cisco enterprise architectuire mosudles
enterprise campus
enterprise edge
service provider edge
remote
Failure domains_ areas of a network that are impacted when a important device goes down or encounters a problem
reducing failire domains decreases the chance of loosing connectivity to a network (fault tolerance) ______ also simplifies troubleshooting
Page 2
Designing for Scalability
Use modular equipment
Page 3
designing for reduntancy
install duplicate equipment
provide reduntant paths
Page 4
Expanding the Network
increasing bandwidth
link aggregation- incresing the amout of bandwidth netween devices by creatung one logical lim made up of several physical linkd
cisco's term for this is EtherChannel.. this is a form of link aggreacgation used in switched networks
expanding access layers
this can be done by using wireless connectivity

switch hardware
switch platforms
fixed
modular- ussually at the core and distribution layers
stackable
non stackable
Vss (virtual swithcing system)- catalyst 6500 switches....they can be in separate locations and once on the same network can be seen as one switch.. devices on the switches can be seen on the remote switch...
Port density
Number of available ports...
this is determined by the # of connects that is needed in a particualr area
SFP--Small form fator pluggables
forwarding rates of a switch
It is ver important to know the backplane capabilities of a switch. For example, 24 Gbps switch should be able process 24 Gbps when all ports are being used
an auxiliary port (out of band connection)--- situation where an auxiliary port would be advantageous when the device is in a remote location and in band connection is not available.
