Who are the world superpowers? Soviet Union British Empire Spain USA China Superpowers exercise various forms of power; Military - access to nuclear weapons and satellite spy technology Cultural - protection of a particular way of life and cultural values that influence they way others behave and think (USA) Geographical - the sphere of influence a superpower has. It may be due to physical/cultural presence in widespread locations. Physical location can help it become a superpower (EU) Economic - wealth allows superpowers to export their power around the world, buy resources and influence trade patterns Future Contenders: BRICs - demographic powers, some have economic power, indivdual strengths EU - slightly uncomfortable position, lack of full integration - superpower status Gulf States - increasingly important from an energy and cash perspective Japan - power on the slide?
