UN:Founded in 1945, made up of 193 member states including; - China - France - Russia - UK - USAThese 5 countries make up the security council. They have the right to VETO (decline) any resolution going through the general council.What do they do? Maintain international peace and security - works to prevent conflict, helps parties in conflict make peace, creates conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish Promote sustainable development - aims to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social or humanitarian character and promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms Protect human rights - brought human rights nt the realm of international law Uphold international law - established conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained Deliver humanitarian aid - delivers humanitarian relief operations caused by natural and man made disasters Role in neocolonialism and maintaining superpowers: Set up of security council was used as a tool of superpower influence Neocolonialism is dominated by the EU
World Bank:An international organisation that provides loans for LEDCs, that was established in 1944 in Washington DC. The World Bank has 2 goals to reach by 2030; To end poverty by reducing the percentage of people who are living on less than $1.25 a day to 3% Promote shared prosperity by fostering the income growth of the bottom 40% for every country There are a total of 188 members of the World Bank including China, USA and the UKWhat do they do? Provides low interest loans that can be invested in education, health, public administration, infrastructure and finance The majority of presidents have come from the USA, this has caused much concern as the USA provides much of the funding for the World Bank Role in neocolonialism and maintaining superpowers: Forged the Washington consensus in 1990. The policies included deregulation and liberalisation of markets, privatisation of government assets and downscaling of government. This causes problems by keeping the wealthy countries rich and oppressing the developing world economically It supports the free market which encourages TNCs to take over
G20:G20 is made up of the finance ministers and central bank governors of 20 countries.What do they do? Promote balanced and sustainable economic development in order to narrow development imbalances and reduce poverty Hold meetings to discuss ways to strengthen the global economy, reform international financial institutions, improve financial regulations and implement the key economic reforms that are needed in each member economy Meet in times of economic crisis to discuss solutions G8:Group of 8 highly industrialised countries that hold an annual meeting to foster consensus on global issues like economic growth and crisis management, global security, energy and terrorism.G12:Group of 12 industrially advanced countries whose central banks co-operate to regulate international financeRole in neocolonialism and maintaining superpowers: A landmark G8 initiative is to boost agriculture and relieve poverty has been damned as a new form of colonialism after African governments agreed to change seed, land and tax laws to favour private investors over small farmers Its members have the authority to make decisions on global issues. They are therefore given the power to make decisions from countries across the world. This helps maintain its member superpower status
EU:A politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located mainly in EuropeWhat do they do? Based on rule of law. Every action taken by the Eu is founded on treaties that have approved voluntarily and democratically by all EU member countries A treaty is a binding agreement between EU member countries. It sets out EU objectives, rules for EU institutions, how decisions are made and the relationship between the EU and its member countries EU - Common Agricultural Policy: Helps farmers produce sufficient quantities of food for Europe Ensures food is safe Protects farmers from excessive price volatility and market crises Helps them invest in modernising their farms Sustains viable and rural communities with diverse economies Creates and maintains jobs in the food industry Protects the environment and animal welfare Role in neocolonialism and maintaining superpowers: Used the international financial mechanism to impose neocolonialism on Greece and Ireland The mechanism is not only a device to keep the EU periphery countries finacially dependent on the banks for decades but it is mainly intended to have major public assets from untapped natural gas and petroleum
