Solutions are main part of human life. There is more to study on the characteristics of solutions. But before that we should have an idea on the main aspects of solutions and this article is providing such an idea and makes clear about different types of solutions.
Solutions are the unavoidable part of human life and in many daily aspects solutions are getting used. So it is important to get a view on the solutions, its definition and different types of solutions. Before getting into the topic we should know what the same means. So let us first try to understand what you mean by the word solutions.
What is a solution?
Solutions are important in our life. But study on solutions or any topic would be incomplete without a definition. So let us define the term solutions now. 'Solutions' generally mean homogenous mixture of two or more than two components. Now a doubt may arise what you mean by the term 'homogenous'. It means the properties of the component or the object would be same. When we analyze the case of the solutions we can see that the compositions and properties of the components present within would be somewhat equal and in an order everywhere. So we can add the term homogenous mixture to the definition of the word 'solution'
Variety in solutions.
Solutions can be classified according the need. Basically we classify the solutions into three categories. They are the liquid solutions, gaseous solutions and the solid solutions. Now let us get into further details of the categories. Anyhow before going to the explanations we would have to know about more terms. One among them is binary solution. In the definition we said that solution is a homogenous mixture of two or more components. If the solution contains only two components we can call t as a binary solution. The two components present would be always solute and solvent. Anyhow in any solution we can differentiate between solute and solvent. Solvent would be seen in the largest amount and all other components other than solvent are dissolved in the solvent. They are called as solutes. So solute would be always least than the solvent amount. Variations occur in the case of concentrated solutions etc. only. Now let us understand the three categories in detail and we can make use of the terms solvent and solute here.
Liquid solutions
The solutions in which liquid materials act as the solvent is known as liquid solutions. We can again see three categories within this group. First one is solid in liquid type. The solute would be a solid and best example for this type is glucose in water. Other is known as liquid in liquid type. IN such a category the liquid solute is dissolved in liquid solution itself. Best example is the case of ethanol in water. The gropu also include gas ion liquid type and the best model for that would be example of oxygen dissolved in liquid water.
Solid solutions
Solid solutions would be having the solid as their solvent and the three state solid ,liquid and gas materials act as solutes. So we can classify them to three like that of first group. The example for soli in solid solution is copper seen with gold. Here gold is the solvent. Gas in solid includes hydrogen gas stored in the interstitial sites of solid element Palladium. Liquid in solid would have the model of amalgam of mercury with solid sodium.
Gaseous solutions.
The final but major and common group is named gaseous solutions. They would have gas as their solvent. Gas in gas type acts as sub category and that include oxygen as mixture along with the nitrogen gas. Chloroform in nitrogen gas comes under the liquid n=in gas type and at last the solid in ga is present. The example for solid in gas type includes camphor along with nitrogen gas.
These are the main classifications of solutions and a big region of common solution seen at present fall in any of these three groups.
