- 1What is an (NIC)?A Network interference card converts data signals into data signals that can be transferred into data signals that can be sent across the Network.

piece of information to a single computer. - 6What is a LAN?A LAN is a local area network. This means that on the network, there are only local computers which are in the area.
- 7What is a WANA WAN is a Wide Area Network. This means that on the network, there are computers from places far away like the internet. That is a WAN with computers from all over the world.
- 8What is a computer network?A computer network is two or more computers connected together to share information and resources(this can include Physical or wireless connections, or both)
- 9What are the advantages of a computer network?Advantages of a computer Network include resource sharing, printer and copiers connected, sharing software between multiple users and saves money.
- 10What are the disadvantages of a computer network?Purchasing the network cabling and file servers can be expensive.
Managing a large network is complicated, requires training and a network manager usually needs to be employed.
If the file server breaks down the files on the file server become inaccessible. Email might still work if it is on a separate server. The computers can still be used but are isolated.
Viruses can spread to other computers throughout a computer network.
There is a danger of hacking, particularly with wide area networks. Security procedures are needed to prevent such abuse, eg a firewall. - 11What devices are needed to produce a LAN?Network Adaptor. A computer needs a network adaptor to connect to a network
Network Medium. Wired networks need cable Cable Connectors Power Supply.Hub/Switch/Router
Network Software. - 12What is the purpose of a WAP?It is a wireless access point which allows the computer to connect wirelessly to a wired network

- 14What is the World Wide Web?The world wide web is a collection of webpages found on a network. The internet.
- 15What is the purpose of a Modem?A modem enables a computer to connect to the internet over a telephone line. Computer signals are digital and normal telephone lines are analogue so you need an analogue to digital converter if you are using an analogue telephone line.
- 16What is the purpose of an ISP?An ISP is an organisation which allows users to use the internet. It comes in different forms commercial, community-owned,non profit or privately owned.BT is an ISP
- 17What is an IP address?An IP address is a number instead of a name so if you typed in 172.217.6.35, you would go onto the google page
- 18What is a URL?Uniform Resource locator. The address of a World Wide Web page.
