Flashcards
The carbon cycle

Flashcards do conjunto (7)
- 1Removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere1. Photosynthesis
2. Fossilization
- 2Photosynthesis1. Green plants remove CO2 from the atmosphere as a result of photosynthesis
2. Build CO2 into organic compound (sugar, starch, cellulose) by photosynthesis
3. Plants eaten by animals -> digested materials are built into compounds -> make up the animals’ tissues - 3Fossilization1. Any environment that prevents rapid decay may produce fossils
2. Carbon in dead organisms -> trapped and compressed
-> remain for millions of years -> may form fossil fuels - 4Addition of CO2 to the atmosphere1. Respiration
2. Decomposition
3. Combustion - 5Respiration1. Plants and animals obtain energy by oxidizing carbohydrates to carbon dioxide and water -> excreted -> return to the atmosphere
- 6Decomposition1. When an organism dies -> enzymes in the cells auto-digestion ( digest its own tissues )
2. Scavengers eat much of the remains
3. Decomposers-> micro-organisms ( fungi, bacteria )
-> invade the remaining tissues -> secrete extracellular enzymes into the tissues -> reabsorb the liquid products of digestion
4. When the organisms die ->
auto-digestion -> releasing products ( nitrates, sulfates, phosphates ) - 7Combustion1. Hydrocarbon fuels -> come from ancient plant -> only partly decomposed
2. When carbon-containing fuels are burned -> carbon is oxidized to CO2
