Chemistry Module 2 Chapter 2.1
Flashcards do conjunto (10)
- 1What are properties of an electron: mass? charge? Where are electrons located?-Has a mass of 1/2000
-Has a negative charge
-They are found in the outer shell of the atom - 2What are properties of an proton: mass? charge? Where are protons located?-Has a mass of 1
-Positive charge
-Found in the nucleus of the atom with the neutrons - 3What are properties of an neutron: mass? charge? Where are neutrons located?-Has a mass of 1
-No charge
-Found in the nucleus of the atom with the protons - 4Explain the overall charge of any atom, and why?-The overall charge is the ratio of protons to electrons. If there are more protons the overall charge will be positive, if there are more electrons the overall charge will be negative.
- 5What are the purpose of neutrons?-Neutrons hold the nucleus together even with the electrostatic repulsion of the protons in the nucleus
- 6What does the number of protons tell us? What does the atomic mass tell us?-It tells us the atomic number of its corresponding element, which also equals the number of electrons present.
-This tells us the total number of particles (protons and neutrons) in the nucleus. - 7What is an isotope?-Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons causing a difference in atomic mass
(SN= most elements are made of mixtures of isotopes) - 8How will a negative ion differ from a neutral atom, and why? How will a positive ion differ from a neutral atom, and why?-A negative ion will have more electrons than protons, the negative charge indicates this. (F has 9 electrons F- has 10)
-A positive ion will have more protons than electrons, the positive charge indicates this. (Mg has 12 electrons Mg2+ has 10) - 9What physical properties do isotopes have that differ from the element? What do the additional neutrons of isotopes do in terms of chemical reactions?-Higher Boiling point/Melting point, and higher density.
-They do nothing to the chemical reaction, and will react in the same way - 10What is a cation? What is an anion?- A positively charged ion with fewer electrons
- A negatively charged ion with more electrons
