  1. 1ROM (Read only memory) is a flash memory chip that contains a small amount of non volatile memory.Non volatile means that its contents are non changeable and retains its memory after the computer is turned off.
  2. 2Virtual memory is a section of volatile memory created temporarily on the storage device. It is created when a computer is running many processes at once and when RAM is running low.
  3. 3Memory is a key internal component of a computer system. It is used by the CPU when running programs and processing data. There are three types of memory: RAM, ROM and cache.
  4. 4The BIOS is always needed in a computer so must be in non-volatile ROM storage.RAM holds data and instructions in use.
  5. 5Cache memory is volatile and can be read from and written to.Cache memory is used to temporarily hold frequently used data and instructions.
  6. 6Computers use primary memory such as random access memory (RAM) and cache to hold data that is being processed. This type of memory is volatile, which means it loses its contents when the computer is switched off.
  7. 7General purpose computers, such as personal computers and tablets, need to be able to store programs and data for later use.Secondary storage is non-volatile, long-term storage - It is used to keep programs and data indefinitely.
  8. 8Without secondary storage all programs and data would be lost the moment the computer is switched off. There are many forms of secondary storage and each type of secondary storage device has its own characteristics.
  9. 9All devices are different, some are more suited to certain applications than others. For example, a hard disk drive has a high capacity and reasonable access speed, making it suitable for everyday storage of programs and data. A USB stick is smaller in capacity, but extremely fast and portable, making it suitable for transferring files between computers.
  10. 10Not all computers require secondary storage. Embedded computers, such as those found in a digital watch or central heating system, do not need to store data when the power is turned off.The instructions needed to run them are stored in ROM and any user data is held in RAM.
