Flashcards
Week 1 - Intro to Databases
Flashcards do conjunto (8)
- 1Data vs informationData - raw facts that have not yet been processed to reveal their meaning to the end user
Information - result of processing raw data to reveal its meaning; facilitates decision making - 2Database- Shared, integrated computer structure that houses a collection of related data
- Contains two types of data:
1. End-user data (raw facts)
2. Metadata (info about data characteristics and relationships) - 3Database management system (DBMS)- Collection of programs that manages the database structure and controls access
- Intermediary between user and database
- Advantages: improved data sharing, access and security; better data integration; less data inconsistency - 4Database categorisation- User: single, multi-user
- Location: centralised, distributed, cloud
- Data type: general purpose, discipline-specific
- Purpose: operational/transactional, analytical
- Structure: unstructured (raw), structured, semi-structured (e.g. XML) - 5Evolution of file system data processing1. Manual file systems
2. Computerised file systems => hiring of data processing specialist
3. Modern end-user productivity tools: => personal computers for business use and spreadsheet programs - 6Structural and data dependenceStructural dependence - a change in the database schema affects data access
Data dependence - a change in the physical data storage characteristics affects data access - 7Data anomalyAbnormality in which inconsistent changes have been made to a database e.g. update, insertion and deletion anomalies
- 8Data redundancy- Same data is stored unnecessarily at different places
- Results in: poor data security, data inconsistency, data-entry errors, data integrity problems
