- 1an empty crossImage that is used to symbolize that Jesus rose from the dead and he is alive. Jesus is alive and in the world working towards coming of Christ. This is the distinction between a cross and a crucifix. The crucifix shows/says that the story is complete with the death of Jesus, but the empty cross tells that Jesus is alive and working in the world - a protestant symbol. Most appropriate sign for Protestant. The cross exemplifies the suffering of part of the Trinity → God is with us in our suffering.
- 2resurrection appearancesJesus appeared to doubting-Thomas, travelers on the side of the road, Mary?/Martha? at the tomb, and to everyone at the ascension. Jesus appeared as a physical human and was hungry at one point. JESUS FULLY RESURRECTED - he had human characteristics. Resurrection appearances reaffirms belief to followers. No one witnessed the physical act of the resurrection; it is not the empty tomb that gives us faith, but Jesus’ appearance to his followers. Jesus didn’t just appear once to a single person, he appeared to many people and was around for an extended amount of time.
- 3immortality of the soulGod raised Jesus from the dead as a physical human, this was not an immortality of the soul. There is no “natural” immortality of a soul. Eternal life/life after death is a gift from God given on an individual basis at the time of death of every individual person → it is a SUPERNATURAL ACT OF GOD.
- 4Jesus is LordThe earliest Christian summarizing everything the first Christians believed. “Jesus is Lord” - a title conferred on him because of his resurrection. If Christ had not been raised, our faith would be futile and we would all still be “in our sins.” This phrase emphasizes that Jesus’ work did not end with his death and that he is still with us in this world and in our lives today.
- 5four meanings of Christ's lordship since the resurrectionKingdom as an ideal to be realized
Hope in the future coming of christ
Kingdom here and now
Kingdom between time - 6resurrection of the bodyThe Christian tradition maintains that the God literally raised Jesus from the dead. This belief was a large part of what the early Church had faith in and what they used to spread their tradition, and it has always been a very important belief to orthodox Christians everywhere. The physical reality of Jesus after his resurrection is very important; gives hope for human life after death. Jesus’ resurrection led people to look back on his life and find meaning in it → he is now known to be special, not just another prophet
- 7gifts of the SpiritWisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues → not given to every Christian, but even those that are given only to a few are given for the sake of three gifts promised to all: NEW LIFE, NEW TRUTH, and NEW COMMUNITY
New Life:
New Truth:
New Community: - 8definition of "faith"A trust not an action. Christianity is not about works, but about trusting in the love of God.
- 9justificationTo free humans from guilt/penalty of sin (separation from God that is always brought on by humans, not God). orthodox Christian view: justification by faith alone. Trusting in God.
how one comes into right/personal relationship with God
Synonyms: saved, salvation, born again - 10sanctification(Occurs after justification?)A costly-nonconformity”
sanctus=holy [action]
to become Holy. To be more Christ-Like
“growing toward the mind of Christ” - 11imputed righteousnessCalvinistic view that states that we are forgiven by the death and forgiveness of Christ. Because of the purity and beauty of Christ, God looks at us as if we were pure and clean. In this view there is not much hope for the human to change/grow and become more Christ-like
- 12imparted righteousnessRoman Catholic and Wesley view that states that when one trusts in the presence and love of God, one begins to change and be more Christ-like in one’s behavior and attributes; a measurable difference
- 13simul justus et peccatorLatin quote by Martin Luther that means “simultaneously justified and a sinner;” justification does not make us pure forever
- 14How are Christians holy?A holy people recognize their flaws, and they’re dissatisfied with their sinful ways. They are marked by their desire for the Kingdom of God.
- 15resident aliens as description of ChristiansBeing in the world but not of the world
- 16ekklesiaEkklesia are the people of God, they are the “called out” to receive grace and to take grace to the rest of the world. We are supposed to announce it and live it; we are/should not be divided by denomination, class, race, etc.
- 17the invisible churchEven though there are divisions, Christians are still united through their common belief in God
Idea that the church is spiritual, the individual is connected to God - 18branch theory of denominationswe are branches of the same tree where the trunk is Jesus. There are individual tastes or preferences, but we are together through Christ.Justifies all divisions of the church.
- 19providenceThe idea that God is with us and intimately involved - this idea is the reason evil is a problem: if God is all powerful and is the ultimate provider, then why does evil exist? Is God loving enough, but not powerful enough to stop evil? Or is God powerful enough, but not loving enough to stop evil?
- 20theodicyA defense of the goodness and power of God in the face of evil; ways people use to explain why there is evil in the world/why bad things happen
- 21natural evil:Anything from hurricanes and tornadoes to cancer and disease. Natural evil is a source of negative experiences that are a product of uncontrollable negative factors. Never the will of God (orthodox). Natural evil is the result of being a mortal, finite being; natural laws of our mortal world. Natural evil often results from human negligence: security flaws, building a city below sea level (new orleans), genocide
- 22moral evil:Humans separating themselves from God and or other parts of creation. (Sin) Manifestations of war, injustice, and otherwise offensive non-Kingdom ideas.
- 23the Christian explanation of the source of evilEvil comes from free will and the bad decisions that we make; human beings try to make themselves like God → they don’t want to rely on anyone else
Adam and Eve- Humans eat apple because they want to be like God and humans don’t want to be dependent on God.
Fallen Angels- Devil used to be an angel, then rebels and keeps evil in the world.
Human Sexuality.
There is no adequate answer pertaining to the source of evil; we don’t know; the real question is “can the power of evil be broken?” The confession of the church is that we have a God who suffers in the world with us - the light shines in the darkness. - 24memory and hope:Remembering good acts of God will maintain hope that they will come again he will rule again - “right” will have the last say. “All will be well.”
- 25Pollyanna:Book written by Eleanor Porter. Main character Pollyanna had a really unrealistic and “gross” view on what evil was in the world. She did not acknowledge the evil in the world and believed that everything was good. This ties into the theory proposed by Norman Vincent Peale in his book “Power of Positive Thinking” which proposed that by thinking positively and only focusing on the good helps your life and blocks off evil.
- 26human negligenceA theory for where evil is thought to come from. Evil is caused by humans not doing their job. An example would be in a child birth defect. God is not the direct cause of birth defects, while he created childbirth (a perfect process) , human doctors not performing the process correct.
- 27God's relationship to evil:Evil is, by nature, what God is not and cannot be attributed to God. Good can come of out tragedy, but God does not cause evil/hardship to occur.
- 28two similarities, two differences between Christianity and IslamSimilarities
Both religions are monotheistic.
The two share the Genesis account of the origin of creation.
Differences
The Qur’an is considered to have literally come from God, and it is locked to Arabic as being the only pure form of the teachings. The Bible is recognized as the works of man within Christian orthodoxy.
Jesus is considered a deity in Christianity; Jesus is a prophet in Islam. - 29What groups or denominations of Christians are most or least affirming of same-sex marriage?MOST: Episcopalian, Cooperative Baptist, Presbyterian Church USA
LEAST: Southern Baptist, United Methodist, Presbyterian Church of America - 30same-sex marriage: two pro, two con arguments from Christian perspectiveCons
Specific verses in old testament call homosexuality “detestable”
God designed marriage to originally be with a man and a woman
Pro
“Love is enough” - Many characters in the Bible had close/questionable same sex relationships
Jesus spent time with “sinners” and as a sin homosexuals would be approved and not discriminated by Jesus as we are called to love everyone, homosexuals would be included - 31Sheol:(Hebrew) The place of the departed - an afterlife talked about in the Hebrew Bible. It’s one of the words that get’s translated as and interpreted as Hell.
- 32Gehenna(Greek) Gehenna was a literal, factual place on Earth. It was the town dump - a burning place of trash. Jesus talked about Gehenna as a warning for religious leaders. It’s another one of the words that get’s translated as and interpreted as Hell.
- 33integra reparabuntur:Means “reintegrated.” After death, the body is reunited with the soul in both punishment and death.
- 34"death in these boxes":Snake handling - the pastors would say this before they opened the boxes. The point is to emphasize that by handling snakes they are in fact staring death in the face
- 35the anointingthis is when they know that they are safe from the snakes if they are bit...anointed by God?
- 36theistic evolutionBelieve God created through the natural laws
Accept all results of modern science
Accept that one species can give rise to another (decent with modification outside “kinds”)
Vary in whether and how much God is allowed to intervene
View of creation taught in the majority of mainline Protestant seminaries and is the position of the Catholic Church
The first human appeared when they had a religious conscience
We are all made from the same thing
Adam was made from the “dust of the ground”
Story of Adam and Eve should be taken figuratively
No one knows how long the transition took between Adam being from the dust of the ground to when he gained a religious consciousness
Genesis is not merely unaware of the physical and biological conditions for the appearance of humans, it is uninterested in them
The story tells its view of the nature of man by telling a story of God making man - 37young earth creationistsAssociated with followers of Henry Morris
Accept heliocentrism
Believe in flood geology/catastrophism (The Genesis Flood)
Deny biological descent with modification
Believe descent with modification occurs only within “kinds” and is genetically limited
Reject the view that the Earth is billions of years old; reject the idea of the big bang
Believe Earth is between 6,000 and 10,000 years old
Institute of Creation Research - 38intelligent designDescendents of William Paley’s “argument from design” (watchmaker analogy)
The finding of order, purpose, and design in the world is proof of an omniscient designer
Accept natural selection but deny that this is enough to explain the evolution of one kind to another
Accept scientifically accepted age of Earth
Demand a role to be left for an intelligent designer, i.e. God - 39the unmerciful servantMan Begs for mercy on King, King grants him mercy, then same man does not give mercy to man who owes him money. King throws him in jail. Point of emphasis: King would be God, we are His servants. He grants us mercy on our sins, and we should not be the unmerciful servant and turn around and hold grudges and not be forgiving of others.
- 40Would Jesus support the death penalty?Jesus was strictly nonviolent - he held his disciples from taking up the sword to defend and/or protect him from the men who took him in to be killed.
No, because it wouldn’t make sense to kill someone for killing another person. Human life is sacred and should never be taken away. - 41a "new earth"----This is what Acorn refers to as our eternal heaven. This new earth is an earth just like we currently live in, only it is perfect and without sin. We will live human lives on this new earth full of relationships and experiences, only they we will be in the presence of God and we will be free from sin.
- 42"intermediate heaven"---this is the non eternal aspect of heaven. here is where we would go if one of us were to die today. this is where we would we would wait for God to resurrect the world so that we could enjoy new earth. once again this heaven is not eternal it is simply a waiting room, though here we are still with God and free from the curse of sin.
