- 1Birth RateThe number of live babies born per 1000 of the population per year
- 2Death RateThe number of deaths per 1000 of the population per year
- 3Natural DecreaseDeath Rate - Birth Rate
Where there are more deaths overall than births - 4Natural IncreaseBirth Rate - Death Rate
Where there are more births overall than deaths - 5What does the DTM stand for?Demographic Transition Model
- 6Name the features in stage 1 of the DTMBirth rate - High
Death Rate - High
Population Growth Rate - zero
Life Expectancy - low - 7Explain why these features happen in Stage 1High birth rate - no contraception/high infant mortality
High death rate - poor healthcare
Population growth rate is zero as high birth and death rates
life expectancy is low due to poor healthcare so more young than old - 8Infant Mortalitythe number of babies dying before their first birthday per 1000 live births
- 9Name features of Stage 2 of the DTMBirth Rate - High
Death rate - Falls rapidly
Population Growth - VERY high
Life expectancy - increased - 10Explain why these features occur in Stage 2High Birth Rate - no contraception/ people live on farms and therefore need lots of children to hep out as economy is based on Agriculture.
Fallen Death Rate - improved Healthcare
Population Growth high - more births than deaths
Life expectancy increase - better healthcare so people live longer but there are still more young than old - 11Migrationthe movement of people from one area to another
- 12Identify the features of Stage 3 of the DTMBirth rate - falling rapidly
Death rate - falling
Population Growth - high
Life expectancy - big increase - 13Explain why these features occur in Stage 3 of the DTMFalling Birth rate - emancipation of women and better education. Contraception use increases. Economy is now manufacturing, not farms so fewer children wanted. Women now work, so have less time for children, so have less children as a result.
Death rate falls - more medical advances
Population growth high - still more births than deaths
Life expectancy - due to medical advances, more people live to be older - 14Emancipation of womanFemales have the freedom to do whatever they want, including getting an education and a job.
- 15Pull factorSomething that makes you want to GO there
- 16Push FactorSomething that makes you want to LEAVE a place
- 17Identify the key features of Stage 4 of the DTMBirth rate - low
Death rate - low and fluctuating
Population growth - zero
Life expectancy - high - 18Explain the key features of Stage 4 of the DTMLow Birth Rate - Urbanisation (People want more possessions as their wealth improves, so less money for kids)
Low death rate- healthcare
Population growth - zero because not many people are being born, but they are living to old age, so there is no change
Life expectancy is high - healthcare keeps even more people alive, especially older people, so people live longer - 19Dependent populationthose who rely on the working population for support e.g. the young and elderly.
- 20Economic MigrantA person leaving her/his native country to seek better economic opportunities (jobs) and so settle temporarily in another country
- 21Identify the key features of Stage 5 f the DTMBirth rate - slowly falling
Death rate - low
Population growth - negative
Life expectancy - high - 22Explain the key features of Stage 5 of the DTMLow Birth Rate - Elderly relatives in care homes means that there is less money for parents to spend on the young, so they have fewer children
Low death rate - healthcare
Population growth - As healthcare advances keeps many old people alive, there are more old people who go into care homes which their children have to pay for. These parents spend less money on their children, and have less of them of them than before, so as a result, there are more old people than young, who then die.
Life expectancy - more old than young - 23Dependency Ratiothe ratio between those of working age and those of non-working age.
- 24Economically ActiveA.K.A the workers
- 25Refugeepeople forced to move from where they live to another area
- 26Host CountryWhere the people move TO.
- 27Country of Origin/ Source CountryWhere people have moved FROM
- 28Pro-natalist PolicyAn attitude or policy that encourages childbearing
- 29Sustainablemeeting the needs of today without compromising the needs of the future
- 30Brain Drainmass emigration of technically skilled people from one country to another country
- 31emigrationleaving one's own country in order to settle permanently in another
