Atomic Structure

Lucy Aird Chemistry National 4/5 Inglês 10 flashcards

Flashcards do conjunto (10)

  1. 1ElementsMade up of small particles called atoms.
A substance which atoms are of one kind only.
a substance which cannot be broken into simpler substances.
Classified as: naturally occurring or man made, solid, liquid or gas, metals or non-metal.
  2. 2Periodic TableThe elements are arranged in the Periodic Table in increasing atomic number. Metals are all on the left side of the zigzag line whereas non-metals are on the right. The Periodic Table can be divided into rows called periods and columns called groups.
  3. 3Periodic Table GroupsElements with similar chemical reactions are arranged in the same column or group.
 Group 1 the Alkali Metals are very reactive and are stored under oil.
Group 7 the Halogens are reactive non-metals.
Group 0 the Noble Gases are very unreactive.
Transition Metals are the group in the middle of the Periodic Table between group 2 and 3
  4. 4Compounds MixturesCompounds form when two or more elements are chemically joined together.
Mixtures when two substances are joined together but don't chemically join.
  5. 5Structure of Atomssmall positively charged nucleuses
    negatively charged electrons
  6. 6Proton, Electron, NeutronParticle Location Charge Mass
Proton In the nucleus +1 1
Neutron In the nucleus 0 1
Electron Outside the nucleus -1 0
  7. 7Electron arrangementArranged in energy levels.
The first energy level may contain up to 2 electrons
The second energy level up to 8 electrons
The third up to 18 electrons
  8. 8Atomic and Mass NumberThe atomic number is the number of protons in an atom.
Protons and neutrons in an atom is known as the mass number.
  9. 9Isotopes and Relative Atomic MassIsotopes have the same atomic number but a different mass number.
Relative atomic mass of an element is the average atomic mass taking into account the proportion of each isotope.
  10. 10IonsIons are formed when atoms gain electrons to make negative ions or when atoms lose electrons to form positive ions.
