Flashcards do conjunto (24)

  1. 1Purpose of the CPUThe CPU is the brain of the computer, responsible for all of the computer's processing.
  2. 2Fetch, decode, executeFetch – the next instruction and any involved data to be fetched from the main memory.
Decode – decodes the instruction to make sure it can be carried out.
Execute – carries out the instructions.
  3. 3Cock, speed, cache, number of cores - performanceClock speed - Cycles per second measured in hertz(Hz).
Cache size - Superfast working memory. The higher the cache size, the better the CPU performance.
Number of cores - The number of duplicate CPUs on a single chip.
  4. 4Difference between RAM and ROMThe RAM is random access memory and is volatile however ROM is read only memory and is non- volatile.
  5. 5Purpose of RAM in a computer systemThe RAM is where running programs and data are stored when the computer is turned on.
  6. 6Purpose of ROM in a computer systemThe ROM stores the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again.
  7. 7How the amount of RAM in a personal computer affects the performance of the computerThe more RAM there is, the better the computer system is at multitasking, processing data and more instructions can take place.
  8. 8Cache memoryData is processed by the CPU. If the data cannot be found in the cache then it has to travel in order to check the main memory. Data is then copied to the cache, if the CPU needs it again it will be able to get hold of it a lot quicker.
  9. 9Virtual memoryVirtual memory is part of the hard drive and is used as an extension to the RAM.
  10. 10The need for secondary storageSecondary storage is needed so that disks can be written to and read, lasers can read and write using light and data to be recorded without moving parts on chips.
  11. 11Magnetic storageDisks contain circles called tracks. Each track is divided into sections called sectors. To read and write the data on disks, disk heads are mounted on mechanical arms.
  12. 12Advantages of magnetic storageMagnetic storage is cheap, has a fast write speed and has a vast storage capability.
  13. 13Disadvantages of magnetic storageIt has a lot of mechanical parts, not much durability and isn’t very portable.
  14. 14Optical storageData is stored as pits and lands burnt into a spiral track circulating outwards from the centre. A laser beam passes over these and the level of reflection is measured in order to collect binary (0’s and 1’s)
  15. 15Advantages of optical storageOptical storage is cheap, portable, and is small, not taking up too much space.
  16. 16Disadvantages of optical storageIt has less storage capability, is easily scratched and damaged, has slow writing speeds and you need a certain reader device.
  17. 17Solid state storageSolid state disks use non volatile memory to store data and information.
  18. 18Advantages of solid state storageSolid state storage has a high durability, makes no noise, has a faster start up time and is fast to read and write to.
  19. 19Disadvantages of solid state storageIt has less storage capability and is expensive.
  20. 20Input devicesAn input device allows us to input information from the outside world into a computer so it can be stored and processed digitally. An example of an input device is a microphone.
  21. 21Output devicesAn output device takes the data stored inside a computer digitally and turns it into another format which we can process , so that it can be outputted to the outside world. An example of an output device is a speaker.
  22. 22Specialist devices - physical disabilityThere are microphones on door, that are input devices, that allow people who have missing limbs to open doors, window, cupboards etc.
  23. 23Specialist devices - deafThere are alerting devices, which are output devices, that can flash if an event occurs such as a telephone ringing so that people who cannot hear can know when these things happen.
  24. 24Specialist devices - blindOn the buttons and screens of cashpoints, there is braille so that the blind can enter their personal details. There are also speakers, output devices, so that they know what to press.
