Models of memory
Flashcards do conjunto (17)
- 1what are the three stages of memory?encoding, storage/retention, retrieval
- 2What is encoding?encoding is the initial registration of information into memory and its conversion into a code that allows storage to occur
- 3what is storage/retention?memories are held for a period of time - theories about how these stores are structured and what processes there are required to store the memories
- 4what is retrieval?the ability to access stored memories when they are needed
- 5Who proposed the multistore model of memory?atkinson and shiffrin
- 6what are the distinguishing features of the MSM?it emphasises the difference between the structural components of a short-term memory store and a long term memory store, such as rehearsal and coding
- 7what is the sensory memory?holds information for less than a second in the same sense that has entered the sensory system, e.g. a visual image is held as a picture
- 8What are the properties of the short term memory according to the MSM?has a limit of 7 items (on average), the capacity can be extended through chunking, the duration is around 18 seconds and the coding is mainly auditory
- 9what are the properties of the LTM?it uses an abstract or semantic code, has a potentially unlimited capacity and infinite duration
- 10outline the baddeley study (1966)investigated the coding in memory. ppts learned a set of acoustically similar words and a list of semantically similar words. found that more errors were made from the acoustically similar words on immediate recall, but more errors were made in semantic when recall delayed 20 minutes
- 11who proposed the levels of processing theory of memory?craik and lockhart
- 12What does the LOP theory propose?process rather than structure is important in memory recall and that information can be processed at a number of different levels
- 13what are the three levels of recall?shallow/structural, intermediate/phonetic, deep/semantic
- 14What are the two types of rehearsal?maintenance and elaborative
- 15what is maintenance rehearsal?repeating something e.g. repeating words to commit them to memory
- 16what is elaborative rehearsal?involves going over the material by processing the meaning and not simply repeating
- 17outline the craik and tulving studyinvestigated LOP by giving ppts words to process at different levels - did in class
