Flashcards
Systems Architecture Memory Storage
Flashcards do conjunto (16)
- 1What is the CPU and what does it do?It is the Central Processing Unit and is responsible for all the computer's processing
- 2What are the main components of a computer?Main Memory
Input devices
Output devices
Secondary storage - 3What is the program counter?the program counter is a special purpose register that holds the address of the next instruction to be executed
- 4What are general purpose registers?General Purpose registers hold data such as numbers during arithmetic calculations.
Some architectures have just a single register called the accumulator - 5What does ALU stand for and what operations does it perform?Arithmetic Logic Unit performs:
Logical operations
Shift operations
Arithmetic operations - 6What does the control unit do?The control unit coordinates all of the activities taking place within the CPU
- 7Describe the Fetch Decode Execute operation that takes part in the CPUFETCH causes the the next instruction and any data involved to be fetched from main memory
DECODE decodes the instruction
EXECUTE carries out the instruction
and repeat - 8What factors effect the CPU performance?Clock Speed
Cache size
Number of cores - 9What is cache memory?Cache is a small amount of very fast, expensive memory in the CPU and can be accessed faster than RAM
- 10Name TWO benefits of cacheThe data used most often by the CPU is held in Level 1 cache so is instantly available
This greatly reduces the time that the CPU has to wait for data from main memory - 11What are embedded computersAn embedded computer is a single microprocessor that includes RAM, ROM and a CPU
An embedded computer is frequently used to control a device using simple controls - 12what are the TWO main types of primary memory?ROM (Read Only Memory)
RAM (Random Access Memory) - 13What is RAM used for? When applications or programs are loaded, they are copied into RAM from the Hard Disk. Documents (data) that are used with those programs are also opened by copying them into RAM as the working memory
- 14What is ROM used for?for data that needs to be permanently held in memory even when a computer is turned off
- 15What does SSD stand for and what does it do?A Solid State Disk is a disk in the computer that use none volatile flash memory to store information
- 16What is flash memory best for?Flash memory is best for devices such as cameras, mobile phones and USB memory sticks
