Flashcards
Making polymers (C1)

Flashcards do conjunto (9)
- 1HydrocarbonCompound made of carbon and hydrogen atoms only
- 2Examples of hydrocarbons•AlkAnes(a hydrocarbon that has single covalent bonds only)
•AlkEnes(a hydrocarbon that has double covalent bonds) - 3Why is propane(C₃H₈) a hydrocarbon?Because it only has C and H atoms(It's an AlkAne because all the bonds are single covalent bonds)
- 4Why is PropEne(monomer)(C₃H₆) a hydrocarbonBecause it only contains C and H atoms(It's and AlkEne because it has a double covalent bond)
- 5What is bromine tested for ?An AlkEne:
(When orange bromine water is added the AlkEne turns colourless) - 6What is addition polymerisation? The process which many AlkEne monomers react to give a polymer(reaction needs high pressure + a catalyst)
- 7How can you recognise a polymer from its displayed formula?By looking out for a:
-long chain
-the pattern repeating every 2 carbon atoms
-two brackets on the end with extended bonds through them
- an 'n' after the brackets - 8Displayed formula of poly(ethene)Enter text here...

- 9Why is Propanol(C3H7OH) not a hydrocarbon?Because it contains an oxygen atom
