What is a skill? A learned ability to bring about pre-determined results with the minimum outlay of time, energy or both (Knapp, 1963)
What are the characteristics of a skill? Aesthetic Consistent Efficient Fluent Accurate Controlled Economical
What is an open skill? A skill performed in an unpredictable environment
What is a closed skill? A skill performed in a predictable environment
What is a gross skill? A skill that uses large muscle groups e.g. rugby tackle
What is a fine skill? A skill that uses smaller muscle groups e.g. table tennis
What is a self-paced skill? A skill where the performer controls the speed at which the skill is performed e.g. penalty in football
What is an externally paced skill? A skill where the performer has no control over when to start the skill or how fast it might be performed e.g. sailing
What is a discrete skill? A skill that has a clear beginning and end e.g. tennis serve
What is a continuous skill? A skill that has no clear beginning or end e.g. cycling
What is a serial skill? A skill that contains several discrete skills in order to make a more integrated movement A skill which consists of a series of subroutines e.g. triple jump
What is a low organised skill? A skill that can be easily broken down into subroutines e.g. swimming stroke
What is a highly organised skill? A skill that is not easily broken down into subroutines e.g. volley in football
