Metamorphic Rocks
Flashcards do conjunto (16)
- 1how are metamorphic rocks formed?metamorphic rocks form when intense heat or pressure alter existing rocks
- 2what are tectonic plates?plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into several plates that glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core.
- 3what is foliation?the movement of the minerals into the layers or bands.
- 4what is shearing?folding of rocks or sliding different parts of the rock sideways
- 5what happens when rocks get buried deeper?the temperature and pressure increases
- 6what are the three major types of metamorphism?regional metamorphism
contact metamorphism
dynamic metamorphism - 7What is contact metamorphism?Contact metamorphism is the name given to the changes that take place when magma is injected in the surrounding solid rock
- 8what is regional metamorphism? This is where rock is altered by both heat and pressure. This kind of metamorphic change often occurs across large areas as a result of colliding plates or rocks being buried.
- 9what is dynamic metamorphism?metamorphism produced by mechanical forces.
- 10what is metamorphism?the forming of metamorphic rocks
- 11Examples of foliated metamorphic rocksslate, schist,gneiss
- 12Examples of non-foliated metamorphic rocksmarble and quartzite
- 13where in the earth do metamorphic rocks form? They may be formed simply by being deep beneath the Earth's surface, subjected to high temperatures and the great pressure of the rock layers above it.
- 14What is the name of the tectonic plate that AustraliaIs is on?the Australian plate
- 15How are diamonds formed?Diamonds are gemstones that can be formed in metamorphic rocks when parts of the crust become pushed into the mantle.
- 16What is a dichotomous key?Scientists use dichotomous keys to classify things based on properties that can be classified.
