What is Malaria caused by? Protozoa
What is a Protozoan? A single-celled organism
What is a Pathogen? A microorganism that causes disease
How is Malaria spread? By mosquitoes
A protozoan is a parasite. What is a parasite? An organism that lives off another organism and often causes harm
A mosquito is a Vector for Malaria. What is a Vector? An organism that carries the disease without getting it themselves
How do mosquitoes pick up Malaria? By feeding on an infected animal
How do mosquitoes spread Malaria? By feeding on another animal once it has picked up the disease. It infects the animal by inserting Malaria into the blood vessels.
What methods are there when reducing the spread of infection of Malaria? Draining areas of water containing eggs or spraying them with insecticide. Introducing fish to eat the mosquito larvae. People can be protected by using insecticides or mosquito nets
What is a counter-current heat exchange system? A system where heat is transferred from warm blood from the heart to cold blood returning from extremities
