Flashcards do conjunto (14)

  1. 1ValidationChecking the data entered is reasonable.
  2. 2VerificationChecking the final data entry matches the data captured.
  3. 3What stages can incorrect data be entered into the system?-Data capture stage: data may have been filled in wrongly or could be illegible.
-Transcription stage: human error can cause mistakes.
-Transmission stage: data can become corrupted.
-Processing stage: problems may occur with the hardware or software.
  4. 4What are the 5 types of data?1. Integer - 43, 564
    2. Real - 56.7, 9.54
    3. Strings - blocks of text
    4. Boolean - one of two values e.g. 'true' or 'false'
    5. Date/time - 06/12/2012 18:00
  5. 5Validation checks: What is a presence check?Makes sure important information has been entered e.g. a contact database may require a full postal code and if the field is empty the software will ask for it to be filled in.
  6. 6Validation checks: What is a range check? This checks that the data is within a specified range e.g. the date 03/13/2025 is impossible so the software will ask for the month to be re-entered.
  7. 7Validation checks: What is a type check? This checks to see if the data entered is of the right type e.g. software won't accept a real number to be entered where a integer is supposed to be.
  8. 8Validation checks: What is a length check? This makes sure the data entered is the right length e.g. a phone number is 11 digits, so if a number is entered with 12 the software will ask for it to be re-entered.
  9. 9Validation checks: What is a lookup check? The program will check whether entered values match one of a set of pre-defined inputs e.g. inputs from a drop-down list.
  10. 10Validation checks: What is a picture/format check?Data is rejected if it doesn't look like it's meant to e.g. if the computed expects a date in the form DD/MM/YYYY then it might reject an attempt to enter 28/04/68.
  11. 11Validation checks: What is a check digit? This checks that the numerical data has been entered accurately. The final digit of a number is determined by a formula using all the previous digits e.g. when a barcode is scanned, the software will reject the data if the check digit it calculates is different to the one it reads.
  12. 12Verification means checking for accurate input by...-Proofreading is when input is verified by comparing the data in a system with the original.
-Double entry is when data is entered twice by different people. The computer compares the versions and shows any differences between them, showing where errors are.
  13. 13What are 2 problems with validation?1. Error trapping is only as good as the software designed to trap the errors.
    2. Validation only makes sure that the data is reasonable, not that it is correct.
  14. 14What are 3 problems with verification?1. Both proofreading and double entry are time consuming and expensive.
    2. Verification only makes sure that the data entered matches that in the input form, not that it is correct.
    3. Human error is still possible.
