- 3μη σε και ὁπλοτερος περ ἐων ἀγρονδε διωμαι,Take care that although I am indeed younger than you I do not chase you away to the country,
- 4βαλλων χερμαδιοισι. βιηφι δε φερτερος εἰμι.striking you with stones. And I am stronger in might than you.
- 5αἰ γαρ παντων τοσσον, ὁσοι κατα δωματ᾽ ἐασι,I wish that I were as superior in strength in of my hands
- 6μνηστηρων χερσιν τε βιηφι τε φερτερος εἰην!to all the suitors who are in the house!
- 7τω κε ταχα στυγερως τιν ἐγω πεμψαιμι νεεσθαιThen I should send soon someone to go from our house to their

- 12ἐν χειρεσσ᾽ Ὀδυσηι δαιφρονι θηκε παραστας.placed it in the hands of wise Odysseus.
- 13ἐκ δε καλεσσαμενος προσεφη τροφον Εὐρυκλειαν.And he, having called out Eurycleia, spoke to the nurse.
- 14"Τηλεμαχος κελεται σε, περιφρων Ευρυκλεια,"Wise Eurycleia, Telemachus order you
- 15χλησαι μεγαροιο θυρας πυκινως Εὐρυκλεια,to close the well-fitted doors of the hall tightly.
- 16ἠν δε τις ἠ στοναχης ἠε κτυπου ἐνδον ἀκουσῃAnd if any of them hear either groaning or din of the men
- 17ἀνδρων ἡμετεροισιν ἐν ἑκρεσι, μη τι θυραζεinside within our walls, he orders you not to go out of the doors
- 18προβλωσκειν, ἀλλ᾽ αὐτου ἀκην ἐμεναι παρα ἐργῳ."at all, but be there in silence at their work."

- 22κληισεν δ᾽ ἀρ ἐπειτα θυρας εὐερκεος αὐλης.and then indeed he shut the doors of the well-walled courtyard.
- 23κειτο δ᾽ ὑπ᾽ αἰθουσῃ ὁπλον ωεος ἀμφιελισσηςand a rope of Byblos from a rolling ship lay in the colonnade,
- 24βυβλινον, ᾡ ῥ᾽ ἐπεδησε θυρας, ἐς δ᾽ ἠιεν αὐτοςwith which he fastened the doors, and he himself went inside.
- 25ἑζετ᾽ ἐπειτ᾽ ἐπι διφρον ἰων ἐνθεν περ ἀνεστη,Then he, going to his char, sat, from where he had stood up,
- 26ἐισοροων Ὀδυσηα. ὁ δ᾽ ἠδη τοξον ἐνωμαlooking at Odysseus. And now he was handling the bow, turning it
- 27παντη ἀναστρωφων, πειρωμενος ἐνθα και ἐνθαin every direction, testing it on this side and that,
- 28μη κερα ἰπες ἐδοιεν ἀποιχομενοιο ἀνακτοςfor fear that worms might have eaten the horn whilst its owner was away.
- 29ὡδε τις εἰπσεκεν ἰδων ἐς πλησιον ἀλλονThus someone would say looking at another next to him:
- 30"ἠ τις θηητηρ και ἐπικλοπος ἐπλετο τοξιον."Truly he must be a connoisseur and skilled in [stringing] bows.
- 31ἠ ῥα νυ που τοιαυτα και αὐτῳ οἰκοθι κειται,either, I suppose, he too has a bow of such a kind lying at home,
- 32ἠ ὁ γ᾽ ἐφορμαται ποιησεμεν, ὡς ἐνι χερσιor he is eager to make one, when one notices how skillfully
- 33νωμᾳ ἐνθα και ἐνθα κακων ἐμπαιος ἀλητης."handles it in his hands this way and that, this vagabond practised in evil."
- 34ἀλλος δ᾽ αὐ εἰπεσκε νεων ὑπερηνορεοντωνAnd another of the arrogant young men spoke again:
- 35"αἰ γαρ δη τοσσουτον ὀνησιος ἀντιασειεν"I hope that this man would meet with success just as much as
- 36ὡς οὑτος ποτε τουτο δυνησεται ἐντανυσασθαι!"surely he should ever be able to string this bow!"
- 37ὡς ἀρ ἐφαν μνηστηρες. ἀταρ πολυμητις Ὀδυσσεος,Thus indeed the suitors spoke; but wily Odysseus,
- 38αὐτικ᾽ ἐπει μεγα τοξον ἐβαστασε και ἰδε μαντῃ,as soon as he lifted the great bow and looked over it,
- 39ὡς ὁτ᾽ ἀνηρ φορμιγγος ἐπισταμενος και ἀοιδηςas when a man skilled in the lyre and song
- 40ῥηιδιως ἐτανυσσε νεῳ περι κολλοπι χορδην,easily strings a cord around a new peg,
- 41ἁψας ἀμφοτερωθεν εὐστρεφες ἐντερον οἰος,having tied the twisted gut of a sheep at both ends,
- 42ὡς ἀρ᾽ ἀτερ σπουδης τανυσεν μεγα τοξον Ὀδυσσευς.so without effort Odysseus strung the great bow.
- 43δεξιτερῃ ἀρα χειρι λαβων πειρησατο νευρης.Then taking it in his right hand he tested out the string.
- 44ἡ δ᾽ ὑπο καλον ἀιεσε, χελιδονι εἰκελη αὐδην.And it sang out beautifully, a sound like the voice of a swallow.
- 45μνηστηρσιν δ᾽ ἀρ᾽ ἀχος γενετο μεγα, πασι δ᾽ ἀρα χρωςAnd indeed great distress fell upon the suitors, and the complexion of all of them
- 46ἐτραπετο. Ζευς δ᾽ μεγαλ᾽ ἐκτυπε σηματα φαινων.changed. And Zeus thundered loudly, showing signs of approval.
- 47γηθησεν τ᾽ ἀρ᾽ ἐπειτα πολυτλας διος Ὀδυσσεος,And indeed then much enduring god-like Odysseus rejoiced,
- 48ὁττι ῥα οἱ τερας ἡκε Κρονου παις ἀγκυλομητεω.because the son of Kronos of the crooked thoughts sent him a sign.
- 49εἱλετο δ᾽ ὠκυν ὀιστον, ὁ οἱ παρεκειτο τραπεξῃAnd he took a swift arrow, which lay beside him on the table
- 50γυμνος. τοι δ᾽ ἀλλοι κοιλης ἐντοσθε φαρετρηςexposed. And the others lay in the hollow quiver,
- 51κειατο, των ταχ᾽ ἐμελλον Ἀχαιοι πειρησεσθαι.which the Achaeans were soon destined to experience.
- 52τον ῥ᾽ ἐπι πηχει ἑλων ἑλκεν ωευρην γλυφιδας τε,Taking it and setting it on the bridge of the bow, he drew back the string and the arrow notches,
- 53αὐτοθεν ἐκ διφροιο καθημενος, ἡκε δ᾽ ὀιστονfrom that very place from his chair as he sat, taking a straight aim
- 54ἀντα τιτυσκομενος, πελεκεων δ᾽ ὀυκ ἠμβροτε παντωνhe shot the arrow and did not miss
- 55πρχτης στειλειης, δια δ᾽ ἀμπερες ἠλθε θυραζεthe first socket of any of the axes and the arrow heavy with bronze went right through and out
- 56ἰος χαλκοβαρης. ὁ δε Τηλεμαχον προσεειπε.at the other end. And he spoke to Telemachus:
