- 1What is RAM?This is volatile memory which is limited and used by any program or data that is currently in use.
- 2why is memory management difficult to handle?allocation can cause fragmentation, where blocks of memory are free but spread apart between allocated memory blocks and so cannot be used.
- 3What is paging?where the operating system will load a fixed-size block of information from the secondary storage to the RAM. Basically Available memory is divided into fixed size chunks called pages.
- 4What does paging do?allows a computer to run a program that is larger than the RAM available as it effectively is reading just the part it needs at that time.
- 5what is thrashing?When many processes are running and the computer has insufficient RAM, lots of time is spent swapping pages in and out of virtual memory. This can noticeably slow down the computer
- 6What happens if thrashing continues?most likely program will not run.
- 7What is segmentation?Segmentation is where the memory is split into sections (or segments).
Blocks of the memory are then used to store a section of data. - 8What will a segment have?an ID and its offset (length) which allows a program that has different modules to be linked together within the memory.
