- 1How is sampled audio represented?Sampled audio is represented by using an ADC to sample analogue signals (waveforms) which results in a digital bit pattern. Each measurement is assigned a binary value
- 2Sample resolutionNumber of bits used to store each sample. higher sampling resolution means more accurate amplitude measurements but requires more data
- 3Sampling rateNumber of samples taken per second. higher sample rate means higher quality audio but more data.
- 4Nyquist's TheoremSampling rate must be twice the highest frequency for the audio to be fully represented
- 5Size of a sound sampleLength x Rate x Resolution
- 6MIDI audioRepresented using instructions to detail the pitch, voice, volume, length, and more for each node. MIDI instructions are typically 2 bytes long.
Can be used to store music in a very small file and can be easily changed by editing an instruction.
Cannot be used to store faithful reproductions of real audio waveforms. - 7Why is relative error more important than absolute?Impact of an error depends on the size relative to the numbers that should be represented.
- 8What is a number baseA number base of a system is the number of unique digits it requires to represent its numbers. Hexadecimal is used as a short hand for binary that is easy to read for humans and convert between as each four binary digits directly translates to 1 hex digit.
- 9Ordinal numbersWhen objects are placed in order ordinal numbers are used to tell their position
S = {a, b, c , d}
a is 1st object, b is 2nd, etc - 103 bits can be configured in how many ways?2^3 = 8 different ways of having 3 bit numbers
- 11Floating point adv/disAdv - Can represent a greater range of numbers within a given number of bits due to the exponent.
Dis - Computationally slower. Little precision when using smaller mantissa and greater exponent.
