- 1Von Neumann ArchitectureBoth instructions and data are stored in the same memory and transferred on the same data bus which will always have the same word width
- 2Harvard ArchitectureInstructions and data have their own dedicated memory with their on data bus to move between the CPU and memory. The data buses can be different word widths to each other.
- 3Stored Program ConceptA program must be stored in main memory for it to be executed.
- 4Embedded SystemA special-purpose computer built into devices that often operate in real time (nav systems, traffic lights, etc.)
- 5Contemporary ProcessorA combination of Von Neumann and Harvard architecture. Programs and data are stored in the same memory but cache is split in two.
- 6Reduced Instruction Set Computers (RISC)Simple instructions, simple decoding, less then one word width, 1 clock cycle, more general purpose registers, simple addressing modes, fewer data types, pipelining can be achieved
- 7Complex Instruction Set Computers (CISC)Complex instructions, complex decoding, greater than 1 word width, multiple clock cycles, less general purpose registers, complex addressing modes, more data types
- 8Co-ProcessorAn extra processor used to supplement functions of CPU. May be used to perform floating point arithmetic, graphics processing, digital signal processing and other functions.
- 9Multi-CoreA multi-core processor has more than 1 processor with it's own registers. Multi-core processors should process data faster.
- 10Parallel SystemRelies on software using multiple cores. It either assigns each core one process of the FDE cycle or splits process into separate task for each core.
- 11Dual CoreA processor with 2 cores
- 12Quad CoreA processor with 4 cores
- 13Graphical Processing Unit (GPU)It's primary purpose is to process images. They have a parallel architecture with thousands of cores. They are either standalone cards or built into the motherboard.
