- 1What is an IDE and what are the advantages? An IDE is an integrated development environment which is very useful for coders and compiles code very quickly.
• step through the code line by line, checking the values of variables and finding out where control moves next
o this is particularly valuable when iterating code and you cannot work out why something is/isn’t happening or when your variable does not get set to the correct value
• breakpoints – this stops the program at a chosen (by you) point so you can check the value of the variables
• “watch” a variable throughout the run of a program seeing how its values change without having to slow/stop the program.
• follow the project or company standards, effortlessly. Templates can be created which when set up for a project will restrict options. Code libraries enable code written for standard tasks which adheres to project/company standards to be used
• code comments are often compulsory in IDEs. Every programmer knows to put in lots of comments, many struggle to do it. - 2What is a statement?A single instruction or step within a program – usually on one line, but can overrun
- 3What is a subroutine?A set of instructions that perform a single task, part of a larger program, called by the main (larger) program. Has the advantage of reducing the amount of repeated code.
- 4What is a procedure?A procedure is a subroutine that executes its statements and returns control to the main program. Can have parameter/s passing data to it for the calculation. Does not pass a value back to the calling program.
- 5What is a function?A function is a subroutine that executes its statements and returns control to the main program along with a single value. Can have parameter/s passing data to it for the calculation.
- 6What is a parameter?A parameter is an item of data that is given to a procedure or function. It’s the stuff in the brackets after the name of the procedure or function
- 7What is a sequence?A control structure where the statements are written one after another and each is executed one, in the order in which they have been written
- 8What is selection?A control structure in which an option of statements is provided and a condition is used to decide which (if any) statements should be executed – IF and CASE
- 9What is iteration?A control structure in which a group of statements are repeated (loop, repetition)
