  1. 1Biofuels-They are renewable sources of energy
-Biofuels such as Methane and Ethanol can be used to generate electricity
  2. 2What fuels are used in Nuclear power stations and what fuels are used in Fossil fuel power stations?Nuclear power stations= Uranium or Plutonium
Fossil fuel power stations= Coal, oil or gas
  3. 3Do nuclear power stations release greenhouse gases? Explain your answer. No, because uranium releases energy without burning
  4. 4Do fossil fuel power stations release greenhouse gases? Explain your answer.Yes, because fossil fuels produce gases such as carbon dioxide when they burn
  5. 5How do coal/oil/gas-fired power stations work?-The burning fuel heats water in a boiler
    -This produces steam
-The steam drives a turbine that turns an electricity generator
  6. 6Fossil fuelsFuels which are obtained from long-dead biological material
(example of fossil fuels would be coal, oil or gas)
  7. 7Wind turbineAn electricity generator at the top of a tall tower
  8. 8How are hydroelectricity generators turned?By water running downhill
  9. 9Tidal power stationsTidal power stations trap each high tide and then use it to turn generators
  10. 10a)_____ power does not need water. b)_____ power does not need energy from the sun. c)_____ power is obtained from water running downhill. d)_____ power is obtained from water moving up and down.a) Wind
    b) Waves
    c) Hydroelectricity
    d) Tidal
  11. 11Solar cellsSolar cells are flat solid cells that convert solar energy directly into electricity
  12. 12Geothermal energyThis energy comes from energy released by radioactive substances deep within the Earth.
  13. 13Solar heating panelsThese panels use the Sun's energy to heat water directly
  14. 14What does water being pumped into hot rocks underground produce? It produces steam to drive turbines that generate electricity
  15. 15What do nuclear fuels produce?Radioactive waste
  16. 16Nuclear power ~Advantages~-No greenhouse gases (unlike fossil fuel)
-Much more energy from each kilogram of uranium (or plutonium) fuel than from fossil fuel
  17. 17Nuclear power ~Disadvantages~-Used fuel rods contain radioactive waste, which has to be stored safely for centuries
-Nuclear reactors are safe in normal operation, However, an explosion at one could release radioactive material over a wide area. This would affect these areas for many years.
  18. 18Renewable energy sources and the environment ~Advantages~-They will never run out
-They do not produce greenhouse gases or acid rain
-They do not contain radioactive waste products
  19. 19Renewable energy sources and the environment ~Disadvantages~-Wind turbines create a whining noise which can upset people nearby and some people may consider them unsightly
-Tidal barrages affect river estuaries and the habitats of creatures and plants there
-Hydroelectric schemes need large reservoirs of water, which can affect nearby plant and animal life. Habitats are often flooded to create dams
-Solar cells would need to cover large areas to generate large amounts of power
  20. 20The National GridThis is a network of cables and transformers that distributes electricity to our homes from distant power stations and renewable energy generators
  21. 21What does a high grid voltage do?A high grid voltage reduces energy loss and makes the system more efficient
  22. 22What are Step-up transformers used for? They are used to step up power station voltages to the grid voltage
  23. 23What are Step-down transformers used for? They are used to step the grid voltage down for use in our homes
